Using Junk Mail To Find Domains
By junk mail, I mean the physical stuff that comes through your door almost every day. It’s not always necessarily unsolicited mail; I get plenty from my bank that I have an account with for instance, but most of it is still junk all the same.
About a year ago, Aaron Wall of SEO Book fame, wrote a great post on using junk mail to find new keywords. It’s also a great way to create new domain names.
The main point is that companies spend big money on creating the flyers, cards and mass-mailed letters to hook people into spending money on their products and they need to spend a lot on researching the kind of words and phrases that will get a person’s attention, (along with the right colors, design etc). And if these words and phrases are used by other companies, they’ve got to be worth some time checking out from a domainers point of view.
I tend to find that looking at physical paper mail away from my computer screen for a while, can prove very productive as you have a slightly different perspective.
There are tons of opportunities and possibilities available just by looking through your mail. If one phrase isn’t available as a domain, you can always think logically about an alternative or use a keyword research tool to reveal more possibilities. I would personally be looking for dot coms and dot co dot uk, as I know that many here in the UK will use these two TLDs the most when searching. Just remember to check that you won’t be infringing any trademarks, (if in doubt, don’t).
If nothing else, you’ve put your junk mail to some good use before binning it!
’til next time.
