About Me

I’m Marcus and I’m a UK domainer, (funnily enough), trying to make sense of this whole business and noting the differences between US domaining and the situation here in the UK.

The first domain I bought was not for me, it was for a company I worked for in 2001. It was a .co.uk, I like many people, had no concept of how important a domain actually was and how much more important they would become.

My own domain purchase was made in 2004, it as another .co.uk and it’s what I would now call a brandable domain, not a generic, because it fitted exactly with my business name.

It’s true that most businesses are aware enough of TLDs to choose a .co.uk over a .com in the UK, as they know that it means a ‘company in the UK’. But they are also aware that .com can give them a more global reach and it’s easier to say over the phone etc.

It’s taken tons of reading on my part to get to the point I am at today and it’s going to take more to move further on. It’s also going to take a few years and a lot of education before the mainstream starts to really take notice of domains as investments, it will happen, but patience is required. Here in the UK, I’m noticing more and more cars with personalized number plates - they’re becoming mainstream - and they’ve been available for years.

People do catch on eventually, I’m just glad you and I already have the jump on most of them (with domains) - let’s make the most of it.
